Editorial

Magic City Media editor-in-chief Carlos Miller has always been a storyteller; a wordsmith with a knack for turning vivid phrases into compelling prose. But he is also a stickler for accuracy, especially when it comes to non-fiction. He never fails to double-check - and triple-check - his facts.

A perfect example is Miller's chronicle of Miami, a historical narrative that takes the reader from the moment Europeans first arrived in South Florida in the 16th century all the way to modern-day Miami, a city that never stops evolving.

Miller's professional writing career has taken him to Europe, where he wrote travel articles while working on a novel; to the Southwestern United States, where he spent more than seven years writing and taking photos for daily newspapers.

During his newspaper career, the Miami native covered the Mexican border in New Mexico for the Las Cruces Sun-News; crime and corruption in Southern California for the San Bernardino Sun; and everything from city politics to law enforcement in Phoenix for The Arizona Republic.

Miller was an aggressive reporter who broke stories that gained international attention. He was interviewed several times by radio stations throughout the country, and in one case, a Peruvian news crew flew in to Arizona to interview him about a story he broke on a Peruvian women murdered by her American husband.

He won several regional journalism awards during this time, and was a member of Investigative Reporters and Editors as well as the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Miller then became a freelance writer; a regular contributor for several publications in Arizona, including the Phoenix New Times, Arizona Monthly, BizAZ, TechConnect and Latino Perspectives. He was interviewed by ESPN Radio for the story he wrote about sports and development in the Phoenix area. That story is posted in the right-hand column.

But Miller could never get used to the dry, desert heat. And after ten years of living away from him hometown, including two years in Europe, he embarked on a cross-country trip back to Miami, where he established Magic City Media.

Self-portrait

Miller is a bilingual Colombian-American who was born and raised in Miami. He is comfortable interviewing the city's various ethnic and cultural groups, and understands the dynamics of Miami politics - as strange as they may seem at times.

Below and to the right are a writing samples that display his versatility. His latest piece is also his longest work of non-fiction; the History of Miami.
